LOS ANGELES 23/11/15 - Professional photographer Thor Elias Engelstad of Australia was presented with the 10th Annual Black and White Spider Awards Nominee title in the category of Fine Art at a prestigious Nomination & Winners PhotoShow webcast Saturday, November 21, 2015. The live online gala was attended by over 10,000 photography fans around the globe who logged on to watch the climax of the industry's most important event for black and white photography. 10th Annual Jury members included captains of the industry from Bonhams, Random House, Aeroplastics Contemporary, Stockholm City Museum, Annenberg Foundation, Leo Burnett, FTM Art Advisory and Fratelli Alinari who honored Spider Fellows with 505 coveted title awards and 943 nominees in 31 categories. "It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the 7,686 entries we received this year," said Basil O'Brien, the awards Creative Director. "Thor Elias Engelstad’s "Mermaid," an exceptional image entered in the Fine Art category, represents black and white photography at its finest, and we're pleased to present him with the title of Nominee." Jury member Diane Ruggie from Velocebella agency added, "The gallery of winners and runners up has true stopping power." BLACK AND WHITE SPIDER AWARDS is the leading international award honoring excellence in black and white photography. This celebrated event shines a spotlight on the best professional and amateur photographers worldwide and honors the finest images with the highest achievements in black and white photography. www.thespiderawards.com The work comes signed by the artist accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity. The work is printed using a Digital Type –C process on Fujicolor Crystal Archive Digital Pearl Paper. PEARL paper contains a very special component: pearly mica crystals. Based on the natural mica, they are covered with a thin layer of metal oxides, for example, titanium dioxide. Through an interplay of transparency, refraction, coating and multiple reflections, one can discern silver-white and metallic reflection effects. These lend pictures such an intense warmth and depth; they become a true sensation for the eye. With signed limited editions from Thor Elias Engelstad, every print is documented, and is issued with a Certificate of Authenticity. Digital C-prints are photographic prints made by exposing a sheet of Type-C photographic paper (e.g., Fuji Pearl) to light inside of a digital printer instead of to light projected by an enlarger. The digital C-print is then processed in a color processor just as a traditional C-print would be. While "digital C-print" is the common term for the process, both digital and traditional (optical) C-prints are properly termed "chromogenic prints.” The paper is then developed in traditional darkroom chemistry. The result is an amazing true photographic print that is unsurpassed in sharpness, color accuracy and reproduction of detail while achieving the ultimate in image fidelity, exceeding the quality of traditional darkroom prints.
