About The Artwork

The Re Man Ray Series

is inspired by Man Ray, one of the great inventors of modern photography, this set of images constitutes my homage to the Master, an attempt to directly engage the work of the man who helped ignite my passion for photography, by emulating his inspired experimentation over a century later. This series of images are scans of a paperbound book: PHOTOGRAPHS BY MAN RAY: 105 WORKS, 1920-1934, from which I removed the primary focus of Man Ray’s pictures with an X-acto Knife way back in 1988. This series was created from a 2022 set of high resolution scans that have been retouched in Photoshop.

I describe my work as deconstructive photography, I use the excision of the primary focus of a book bound photograph to glimpse an underlying chaos; examining the quanta of our image making process.

The term is also indicative of the process used to create the images. A source is obtained, usually a book of photos or a pornographic magazine, and the primary focus of the source is removed. Pages of the book or magazine are then scanned and retouched in Photoshop.

The use of found imagery is a reference to the scientific method wherein bodies of work are expounded upon by others. The accumulation of subverted images are a form of mechanical cubism. Photos of space time. Shadows cast by entropy. Private versions of the data dense abstractions produced by particle accelerators.

There are the artistic and philosophical considerations; the difference between an original photograph and its reproduction. The questions of ownership and copyright. The collision of the hand crafted and the machine made.

11x17 images are printed, signed, and numbered by the artist. Printed using Epson Claria Inks on Canson Fibre Rag .
Please inquire for both larger and smaller signed limited edition prints.

Filmmaker/Artist Chris Fiore, born 1959 in Norfolk, Virginia, and received his BFA in painting and film from Antioch College in 1984. In the late 80’s Fiore was one of the founders of the Zone, an artist collective occupying an abandoned warehouse at 104 South 4th St, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Fiore showed at KOAP gallery in the early 90’s and in 1995 directed the underground documentary Trip and Go Naked, winner of the Excellence in Sexual Theater award at Arlenes Grocery Picture Show. He went on to direct the feature documentary Backstage for Miramax, a behind the scenes look at Jay Z’s Hard Knock Life Tour. Fiore’s 2016 documentary, Goodwoman, tells the story of Debra Goodman, an activist brutally arrested for filming the NYPD. Featured in several film festivals, Goodwoman won the Grand Jury Award For Best Documentary at the 2016 LA Film Invasion. Fiore’s first feature film script, The Utopia Virus, was a finalist in the Final Draft Big Break Competition, garnering him representation and a Hollywood roller coaster ride as the directors Darron Aronofsky, Tony Scott, and Renny Harlin considered making the film. Fiore wrote the first draft of the 2008 Wassup Obama ad, directed by Charles Stone, and winner of a Cannes Lion. Fiore has exhibited his artwork in New York, Paris, and Cologne. Fiore’s film work has directly influenced his art over the years, in his use of appropriated imagery, presentation of sequential images, and the cinematically dynamic composition of his mosaic photography.
