I have always marveled at the power of the ocean. Growing up and living near beaches my whole life, I have sat for endless hours staring at waves break on the shore and explode with beautiful and graceful force, a literal infinite dance of foam and currents. A while back I humbly attempted to capture just a bit of that and began venturing down to different beaches along the California coast. I used a combination of long exposure and flash on camera and found it allowed me to capture and see the different layers of the wave as it broke onshore. I would wade out into the shallow surf and stick my camera into the path of an incoming wave, quickly firing off a few frames before yanking it back so the water wouldn’t fry its circuits. The long exposure made visible the patterns of underlying currents, and the flash froze for an instance the rupturing foam as it leaped and sprayed in its last seconds of life before hitting the shoreline. There are a lot of beaches left in California to explore.

Born in Queens, New York and growing up in Greenwich Village, Peter Bennett picked up his first camera and took his first darkroom class at the age of twelve. He was inspired by his maternal grandfather who had a photo studio on the boardwalk in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, and his father, an avid amateur photographer who travelled around the country documenting post WWII America with a medium format camera. Peter spent many years working as a travel photographer, and in 2000 started his own photo agency, Ambient Images, which specialized in images of New York and California. In 2015 he formed Citizen of the Planet, LLC, devoted exclusively to the distribution of his stories and photographs that focus on a variety of environmental subjects. Peter’s work has appeared in hundreds of publications including the New York Times, Sierra Magazine, Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, Sunset Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine, and New York Magazine. His prints hang in the California State Capitol, California Science Center’s permanent Ecosystem exhibit, and many other museums, private institutions, and collector’s homes. He has also had the privilege to work with a numerous local environmental organizations over the years including FoLAR (Friends of the LA River), The Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Heal the Bay, 5 Gyres Institute, Algalita Marine Research Foundation, Communities for a Better Environment, and the LA Conservation Corps. Peter has been an instructor for over twelve years at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, currently teaching classes there on Night Photography and Environmental Storytelling, and for years led their Los Angeles River Photo Adventure tour. Peter has had seven books published either under his name or his former agency, Ambient Images. His most recent book: The Los Angeles River, Photographs by Peter Bennett was published in late 2021
