Movie Still: Self Portrait 1 - Limited Edition of 20 Photograph

In the mid 90's I made a short film in super 8, titled, "When I was a Boy." Sometime ago, I came across the film scraps that were on the editing floor, and had them digitized. Fortunately, I tend to save everything. I re-edited these pieces into a new version of that original film, and had mostly forgotten about it, till the other day, while looking for a file on an old hard drive,I came across the edited film. Much of the work I've been doing recently seems focused around self portrayal and self expression. While the film is so directly self portrayal, I watched it now, with a renewed focus. Super 8 Black and White film is fairly grainy, a quality that is very attractive to many. At one point in the film, the camera intentionally, goes out of focus, and I was immediately drawn to that image- that liminal space- where the sharpness is gone, and yet directly before the subject matter is so abstracted it can't be deciphered. That liminality represents in so many ways, where I am today, as I seek to step out of my previous artwork into a new space betwixt and between where I've been, and where I'm going. Too, much of my recent work seems almost anti-photography, and all about braking photographic rules. This image, while a new direction for me in many ways, also feels very connected to a more formally photographic approach to the subject. Who was I, who amI now, and who willI become? These are the questions enveloping this image.
