About The Artwork

The observation of a two-minute silence by the entire British nation was described recently as a great piece of modern art. Although it was introduced 90 years ago after the terrible impact of the First World War, the act of remembering is still very relevant today as Britain's involvement in war, and the loss of young lives, continues. This series of photographs incorporates the act of remembrance into each image, by exposing film for exactly two minutes, and focuses on the allegorical nature of public sculpture supporting war memorials in many cities and towns. These figures of stone and bronze often occupy positions in sterile, and occasionally, unnoticed spaces within the community. Photography is used to provide a new context to these works of art that exist for us as romanticised stereotypes of the 'ordinary' soldier, sailor or airman in scenes of Peace, Grief, Victory and Death.

Chris Spackman works experimentally, pushing the creative potential of analogue photography, his work explores time, memory and loss. Using various narrative structures he seeks to subvert the still quality of the single photographic image representing simple changes over time through his process and frequently rendering the ordinary, monumental. His research is based in the foundations of conceptual art practices and is informed by a number of different art movements including the still life painters from 17th century Europe.
