About The Artwork

Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the Oculus is a magnificent transit hub in downtown Manhattan at the World Trade Centre. Inspired by the concourse at Grand Central Station, also in Manhattan, the Oculus is a more modern experience which must surely bring glory to the every day commute. This image is an enlarged contact sheet made from twelve separate photographs on medium format film over about twenty minutes. The subtle expansion of time allowed by the sequence of shots means I have been able to shoot the height of the action in all the foreground images emphasising the function of the space. I personally print these works on a beautiful titanium lustre paper that I find perfect for their subtle tonality.

I am a photographer and have been based in Hong Kong, one of the greatest cities on Earth, for most of the last 25 years. My work is on display in Peninsula Hotels in Paris, Chicago, and Hong Kong, at the Norman Forster designed Cathay Pacific Lounge in Hong Kong, in the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and Grand Hyatt Macau, and in the homes on many many collectors World Wide. I have recently shown at the AIPAD Photography Show in New York, where my work was reviewed by Artnet, El Pais and Eye of Photography. Here's the Artnet story; https://news.artnet.com/market/aipad-2019-photography-highlights-1508914 It was in New York in 1999 that my interest in cities crystallised with two years spent there developing my photographic approach which generally favours pre- visualisation of the image and camera-only manipulations to create subjective but recognisable records of our time which I hope are a testament to my belief that cities should be vibrant, enjoyable, sustainable, democratic places that enable a positive future for us on this planet. I love to collaborate with designers and art consultants and an very happy working on commissions.
