Papaveraceae provincial (Red poppies on black) Photograph

This is a photo scan where no camera, no negative, no digital intervention was used. In this case, the subject is four poppies and the equipment a scanner, black cloth, and a laptop computer. The scanner's point source of light, like the sun, reveals every detail that is on the glass but any details not flat on the glass are thrown into soft focus, much like the results attained with a view camera to control depth of field. This is one in a series of plants, fruits, and vegetables that I call "humble" the vegetation of every day. In Provence in the South of France, the wild poppy is a ubiquitous self-seeding flower that captivates visual artists but does not survive being cut for more than a few fleeting minutes.
