For several summers I worked with ecologists in the mountains of California to measure stream changes. While assisting with data collection I was also building a portfolio of photographs and drawings that examine flowing water ecosystems. In this photograph, taken after a long day of work while driving between sites, it was the mood of the mountain valley that impressed itself on me. Clouds, mountains, and a trace of a creek running through the meadow include all the factors that make up a stream, which after all is really just the consequence of multiple landscape processes. Of a few thousand photographs from this period, I am gradually putting together a collection that tells of the beauty and complexity we encountered in our work. The ecologists are publishing scientific papers, and I am sharing the experiences through visual art. The aesthetic owes much to 17th century landscape painting, but here the road, a valley without human presence, and its capture as a digital photograph, point to the post-industrial western landscape, a modern tale of destruction and regeneration. Prints are limited to an edition of 30. I print them myself on Moab Exhibition Luster 300gsm acid free paper on an Epson P800 pigment printer for the highest archival durability in digital imaging. Your print will be signed and numbered on the back, and ships in a tube. Images are printed without borders. For additional sizes and pricing, please contact me.

I am a visual artist using writing, drawing and photography, and creating installations for unusual sites and clients. I grew up a Los Angeles suburb in a landscape re-imagined and transformed by human engineering. In responding to that influence, I work to understand how particular spaces and metaphors illuminate universal themes such as sunlight and shade, written language or water systems. I have been working as an artist for four decades and am dedicated to the evolution of my work and the advancement of the field. For more about what I do please visit my website
