About The Artwork

Digital photograph mounted on aluminium, hand tinted american wood frame. Leaving their wheat fields, 37 Bessarabian families crossed the Atlantic under terrible conditions to reach the tropics. They landed in an uncultivated settlement, created and organized by the Jewish Colonization Association (set up in 1891). Philippsonville was the first Jewish agricultural colony in Brazil. The land was situated alongside a railroad track in Southern Brazil. Disappointed by the harsh living conditions, they did not stay long. The younger generation rapidly integrated the local society by going to the surrounding towns to study and work. They did, however, remain grateful for the land they received. Today only a tiny desolate cemetery and the collective memories of their descendants mark their place in history.
