Paul Cooklin is a British photographer celebrated for his dynamic documentary, architectural, and travel work. His portfolio is defined by emotional depth, striking composition, and the interplay of light and shadow. Whether capturing a bustling metropolis, the quiet majesty of architecture, or the stillness of remote landscapes, Cooklin invites viewers into narratives that feel both universal and deeply personal.
Q&A-
Your photographs capture the interplay of geometry, light, and shadow in settings ranging from urban architecture to remote landscapes. What draws you to these contrasting environments, and how do you approach translating their unique energy into your images?
I’m drawn to both dense streets and open country because they ask opposite things of attention. In streets, I look for silence inside movement: a shaft of light hitting a threshold, a pause around a corner, a geometry that appears for only a minute. I see street photography almost as walking onto a moving set: the buildings are the backdrop, the people the cast, and the weather the lighting rig — but no one knows the dialogue. There is no rehearsal, and the same alignment of elements never happens twice. The tension comes from those components lining up in a way I find appealing or interesting. In quieter country, I look for a different tension — weather, distance and the way a track or shoreline gives a scene its weight. I don’t try to draw the energy out with tricks; I make myself slow enough to catch it. A long day’s walk sharpens both kinds of seeing, and film makes me choose one moment properly rather than collecting many. The contrast matters to me because it keeps the work from settling into the flatly picturesque.
The transition from digital to medium-format film must have been significant. Can you share a moment when the visceral quality of analogue photography truly captivated you and changed your creative direction?
The ‘moment’ wasn’t grand — it was awkward, which is why it stuck. My first roll of black and white, shot on my dad’s Bronica, came back poorly composed and under- or over-exposed in almost every frame, yet it had a physical quality I couldn’t replicate on screen: depth, grain, a slight unease. After years in Photoshop, discovering that an image had been decided by light rather than by me was the visceral turning point.
