About The Artwork

This is the first of a series I intend to explore for the rest of my career... maybe. Portrait Study of Shirley Oluka is an abstract photographic study of Shirley Oluka. The model is Shirley Oluka and this is an abstract Study of her appearance through photographs. The photographs depict Shirley Oluka in a portrait Study. Shirley Oluka, the model, is in a portrait study. The Portrait Study Shirley Oluka posed for is abstract. This, right here, is a Portrait Study of Shirley Oluka.

Giancarlo Diablo LaGuerta is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist and curator, born and raised in Gaborone, Botswana. His work attempts to destigmatize conversations around politics, masculinity, culture and heritage in the context of Botswana and Southern Africa. Giancarlo’s approach to making work is experimental and many of his works blur the line between representative and abstract. This is the case across the many mediums he uses which include painting, drawing, collage, photography, installation video and music production. The themes in his work have ranged from various aspects of his personal experience - including his psychological state – to some of the shared aspects of human existence like grief, religion and politics. Giancarlo is based in Gaborone, Botswana where he continues to hone his craft and work closely with his community.
