Salar de Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia. Originally shot for a travel feature on Bolivia in 2013. This image was nominated in the professional 'Nature' category of the 16th Black and White Spider Awards, 2021. Salar de Uyuni is one of the most extreme and remarkable locations in the world. A vast salt flat left-over from evaporated prehistoric lakes, the salt flats stretch for more than 4,050 square miles, it is the world’s largest salt flat and this becomes abundantly clear when seen from the air. When not covered by water, a thick crust of salt extends to the horizon in quilted, polygonal patterns rising from the ground. The harsh beauty and sense of desolation of Salar de Uyuni makes for an incredible other-worldly experience. Ever since leafing through sepia images in my encyclopaedia as a small boy, I dreamed of visiting strange and exotic places, I never imagined that my life would involve travelling the world for clients that liked the way I saw the world. I'm a romantic, in that I want the image to transcend the everyday, to produce if possible, a visual representation of what I felt at the moment I encountered the scene. I try to capture the magic of being in the moment. My love for travel is inextricably entwined with my love of photography as a medium for expression. Photography is a craft that I have spent many hours, days and years enjoying and also trying to teach to others, for me it is both simple and at the same time supremely difficult, it’s mysterious in that way and I have a deep love for it whether I'm photographing a play of light on a wall near my home in Ramsgate or some hard to reach destination like Salar de Uyuni.
