While touring the Louis Khan-designed Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA, a lone man walked down the middle of the central courtyard. I couldn't have planned a better moment to showcase the scale of the architecture.

About the Artist

James C Jackson

United States

Utilizing the thoughtfulness and consideration often associated with portraiture, James’s work presents built, botanic, and occasionally human subjects in a cinematic, emotionally-driven style.

His work often re-contextualizes the mundane in an effort to encourage the viewer to reconsider their daily surroundings.

Born and raised in Athens, GA, James spent the following decade in Michigan, then 15 years in Orlando. Photography was often a haphazard hobby but a move to Washington, DC, in 2012 (which also neatly coincided with Instagram’s ascendancy) led James to become more intentional with his practice while learning about the new city around him.

Since then, James’s work has appeared in Elle, GQ, Vogue, Travel + Leisure, National Geographic, NY Times, Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, and other national and international publications.

In April of 2019, James completed a commission from the National Gallery of Art, titled Faces of DC, along with friend and fellow photographer Phil Martin.
