About The Artwork

The story of Sarra Coppia Sullam, the poetess who lived in the Venetian Ghetto during roughly the first half of the 17th century. She had a long correspondence with Ansaldo Cebà, a former diplomat who became a monk in a Genovese monastery. Her letters have been lost, but his still exist. What also still exists is a vicious written attack on Sarra by Baldassare Bonifaccio, priest and regular house guest of hers. He publicly accused her of denying the immortality of the soul, which was a mortal sin in both her Judaism and Christianity. She immediately replied with a famous Manifesto, also still in existence. The photographs are part of a large project that includes Sarra's rewritten letters, as well as sound recordings, made between 2019 and 2022. All photography, text, styling and costumes: © Bettiena Drukker Sarra: Nyncke Beekhuyzen

Amsterdam Holland. Lives, works and teaches in Amsterdam. The work consists of landscapes, stills, portraits and combinations of all of these. The images reveal a theatrical background - the photograph as a stage set. The picture becomes an illusion, an association with reality. Historical figures, facts (or fiction) and legends are a major source of inspiration. "In her seemingly nineteenth century work, there is often a sense of doom, and almost always a sense of confusion. If you look closely you often encounter an anachronism somewhere." Unless otherwise stated, all works are printed in a strictly limited edition of eight. Sizes can vary, usually ranging from 30 - 45 cm high, although larger is certainly negotiable. Prices vary accordingly. It makes sense to ship prints unframed, but this, too is up to the buyer. Just drop us an email and we'll work it all out. All series can be acquired as handmade books - these are not limited editions, but are numbered and made upon request with extras in the form of text and carefully selected unique sheets of paper which makes each embellishment different. The books are ringed and usually approximately 30x30 cm (12x12") but since they are made to order, again this is negotiable.
