Schiff No. 43, 2010 (Grand Canal China) from the series kopfüber Edition B 5/5, 150 x 58 cm, 2010 Digital C-Print, printed on fine art paper, mounted on Aluminum and plexiglass, signed on verso. series "kopfueber" – Art meets technology Dirk Brömmel has been photographing ships since 2002 using an “overhead” perspective. This is how the “from above” type of shots originated, which often consist of more than a hundred photographs. In painstaking work the individual photos are reassembled on a computer. This technique produces a virtually distortion-free view of the ships, which would otherwise only be technically possible, if the camera were to zoom in on the ships like a huge telescope from outer space. The original prints, some of which are up to three metres in size, show the ships no longer in water but die-cut on a solid colour background. Some of the colours contrast with, while others match the colour scheme of the ships. New bridges – new overhead shots Dirk Brömmel has photographed five different series to date. A large proportion of the photos are of cargo and passenger vessels, which mainly ply the Rhine. The ship photographs in the third category were taken from bridges above the Chinese Grand Canal and provide a fascinating insight into another culture. This also applies to the black and white shots of Venetian gondolas included as well as the floating markets in Thailand. The photos are snapshots of cargo and people in astonishing detail.
