Simon, Amsterdam Limited Edition of 6 90 cm x120 cm Gallery quality C-type print mounted under acrylic glass with sturdy aluminium dibond backing. Dale Grant has always enjoyed experimenting with lighting in his photography and it is his distinct lighting style which has distinguished his work from his peers. For his gallery work he is influenced by the lighting seen in the paintings of the neo classical period, especially the paintings of the French painter Théodore Géricault (1791-1824). The main subjects of his art photography are the male form and flowers. His male nude series is entitled “HIDDEN” which, through invisibility and the absense of gaze towards the camera, the subject expresses a certain reticence and coyness towards the viewer. In the series, the photographer presents his subject in a guarded state suggesting a certain modesty and reserve around the model and the absense of any form of pretention. Unlike the current movement where the male form is presented in a style that is sexually provocative and exhibitionist as a result of the proliferation of images of the male form on social media, the photographs in the HIDDEN series take the opposite approach allowing the viewers to use their imagination in unraveling that which remains unseen and in doing so creating an individual and unique narrative for themselves.
