Caroline Dejeneffe’s Butterflies interweaves a rich vision of nature through its considered use of symbolism. A woman is presented naked, turned away from the viewer to suggest a vulnerability. She is, however, cloaked by nature through a scattering of butterflies across her body. You can just about feel the gentle presence of the butterflies, the almost imperceptible weight of nature, resting on her bare skin. One butterfly rests, cradled in her delicately cupped hands. This sense of protection suggests a union between mankind and nature, one that is mutual but fragile. The woman’s eyes are closed, deep in thought and reminding us that alongside our physical relationship with nature there is a mental relationship too. Here, the symbolism of the butterflies becomes apparent – known across cultures as a sign of beauty, a sign of the soul, and a sign of metamorphosis or transformation. The flowers included in the composition add a further dimension. Similar to butterflies in representing beauty, they also signify flourishing but with a powerful caveat – the temporary nature of life and the fleeting passage of time. Read together, the woman, the flowers, and the butterflies represent the belief in change and in hope. The woman, like us, is cognizant of the energy woven together and balanced between humankind and nature’s flora and fauna. Anchored in nature, this woman’s body is one piece in a greater whole.
