Still, life is not a subject generally characteristic of Romantic painting. Eugène Delacroix first turned to it in 1862 in Still Life with Lobsters. The subject of the picture is reminiscent of the Louvre watercolor Bouquet of Flowers, which belonged to the group of canvases painted in the late 1840s and which had little in common with previous renderings of floral still lives in France. Those urban windows depict no interior reality, but merely a neutral transparency formless inaccessible of the social life outside. The pictures of this series depict the transformation of the function of the windows. Habitually the window had the function of the exterior that lit up the interior so that's its reality and truth could become visible to us. Here this space is now depicting “une nature morte”, an artificial natural buffer space.
