Bloom. Wilt. Perish. Such is the life cycle of every flower. With her Frozen Flowers, Ems Willems knows how to crystallise those fluid phases. Caught in the ice, her flowers tell us the story of vulnerability. Ems’s main characters are tranquil, sensual beauties that slowly reveal their secrets.
Delicate, transparent petals. A lantern that seems to want to break free from the ice. A white rose that has found its destination in the frost. A semi-decayed chalice that sinks into the ice. And again and again the play of tiny balls, fountains and needles of oxygen bubbles that seem to want to say something. There is a lot to enjoy for visitors who love subtle details. And for lovers of overwhelming color explosions. Because the colors remain powerful even when frozen.
Ems Willems has always been fascinated by flowers: she ‘paints’ with their colors and textures and she plays with her models until she has found the ideal perspective. To tell her stories, Ems uses photography in the purest form: the images are not edited and she uses natural light.
