About The Artwork

My idea for a series on body language began many years ago, when I was working on a photo assignment on traditional Japanese tattoos. I became engrosses in the notion of a body as a canvas and began playing with concepts related to that. Initially, I was attracted to different forms of clothing and materials as a novel canvas, but more I worked on fashion shoots, where women’s bodies are covered by the expression of designers, the more frustrated I became with the idea of covering the human form with tailored fabrics of any kind. I wanted a woman’s body to show its true beauty and sensuality and yet be able to manipulate their skin and form to express my own ideas and inspiration. That's how the “Body Language” series was born.

French artist Claude Charlier is known for his hyper-realistic paintings of discarded cigarette packs and crushed soda cans. Charlier was born in France and studied music and fine art for much of his life. He maintained a career as a professional fashion photographer which led him to travel the world for many years and live not only in Europe and the USA, but for many years in Tokyo. It was during these travels that he was inspired by a discarded soda can and decided to create his Rubbish Collection. Charlier’s choice to paint the discarded objects acts as a means to recycle them, and thus the beauty and memories associated with the consumers’ use.
