Up to 70 year old men harvest tangerines, carrying baskets weighing 200 lbs. The average is twenty baskets full per day, for 6+ hours, earning approximately $20 USD. The Mexican agricultural sector is in crisis, as prices have crashed to unsustainable levels due to cutthroat competition among local producers and buyers, lack of internal regulation, and corruption (misallocation of funds earmarked for communal pest control and fertilization). The inability to colleactively control agricultural pests, due to local government and trade representatives stealing pesticides, only to sell in the market or for personal use, has meant the U.S.D.A. has prohibited the importation of Mexican citrus. Mexican juice companies have favored this, as the resultant over supply and consequent price crash means they can manipulate prices and buy at unsustainably low rates per ton. Most is shipped to Mexico City, where prices may be anywhere from that paid locally to three times the rate. The rest, usually second best, is sold by the tons to juice companies. Some is sold at roadside stands to passers-by.
