These trees are aware of their specific environments. These trees also make decisions concerning their long range health. They can sacrifice a limb to provide more energy to another more profitable part of their anatomy. This image illustrates how those historic decisions create a tangle of historic decisions of life and death. What is so interesting is the obvious interdependence of the life part of the tree with the part of the tree that has long sense ceased to be alive. Also, it is very amazing how beautiful this tangle of life and death are.

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
