About The Artwork

The Age of Steam ^ please select the tab for prints to see the canvas print information ^ Conversations with friends that appreciate old steam engines and recollections from visiting several working steam museums over the years were the inspiration for this picture. Whilst recently studying post-impressionist art I came across the work of Umberto Boccioni (1881-1916) and his famous picture ‘States of Mind – The Farewells 1911’. Together these experiences formed the concept for this picture. My artwork explores the cross-overs between photography, collage, digital art and cubist paintings as a way of capturing memories and imagination. The pictures are created using a pen and ink style digitally, based upon my own photographs, and are printed with high-definition inks on stretched canvas. The picture depicts a steam journey from the purchase of tickets, waiting at the station, the arrival of the train and a view out of the carriage window at passing countryside. The elements are combined in a montage of views from multiple viewpoints simultaneously, just as one would experience in real like. Futurist and Orphism concepts like repeating patterns of the wheels and circles have been used to capture the essence of motion.

I help bring interest to interior spaces through creative and dramatic fine art pictures. I have been a creator all my life from a childhood with construction toys and later as a professional engineer. Having been gifted my first camera in 1969, I have maintained an interest in photography since then, studying the subject more seriously in recent years. I specialise in capturing ordinary subjects and making them extra ordinary using closeups, lighting, colour or editing to help create mood, inspiration, or interesting talking points. I have a passion for taking time to notice the natural beauty that surrounds us, from the depths of space to the small creatures sharing our lives. In my work I try to encourage the viewer to see the ‘everyday’ in a new light by emphasising the extraordinary nature of its complexity or including it an arrangement to suggest an idea or a concept.
