My grandfather was polygamist, and so was his father. And the father after that. Things have changed overtime, and we live in a different way now with smaller families. The time I spent with my grandfather, I saw he was a family man, despite the fact that his type of family would be taboo today in a lot of places. The wives in his house loved him. He was good to them and they were good to him. My art piece, The Bed of Akuku depicts Akuku the King, in bed with his 8 concubines who also happen to work as his personal assassins. Akuku is a king of a land locked Kingdom by the name Boma. The piece was originally inspired by my interest in chess... and I imagined the pieces as human beings, with Akuku as the King, and the concubines, who I named the Assegai, as the pawn. One of them is not who she says she is. She has a plan, a lethal plan. And she is prepared to go greats lengths to execute her plan of revenge. And she will need Akuku's power to do it. Akuku has 5 wives, represented by the Queen, the bishop, the knight, and the rook. All of whom play powerful roles in his house and his kingdom, despite the intrigues and the politics. I am currently making pieces depicting these characters and have already started designing a story to be serialised into novels. I choose these medium because I am a trained photographer and digital artist and this equips me to build fantastical scenarios that may be not available without technology. The subject matter is intriguing as I believe the world is hungry for African fantasy that has been kept narrow and hidden. Each piece is printed on A1 Fine Art paper, for the best possible appearance of the piece. I hope this piece will spur your fantasy imagination and keep you interested to learn the stories of these characters, and maybe spur you to purchase a print. All the best

Wachira Mwangi is a self taught, digital artist, photographer and painter from Nairobi Kenya. He was raised in the slopes of Mt. Kenya. After finishing college and working for about 3 years, he apprenticed under British photographer David Beatty. David was instrumental in turning Wachira Mwangi into a professional who understood his own artistic journey. Wachira Mwangi is greatly influenced by African mythology, on which he was raised on. His work aims to use African wisdom, perspectives and stories to tell the story of Humanity. He is motivated by the history of his people. The rich culture of the land and the long line of injustices that have plagued the land and and the deep spirituality of his ancestors. It is through this work that he wishes to open up uncharted areas of the mind for the viewer, and communicate a global truth via a very local story. His creative process involves writing a story as he hikes across his native land, sometimes up Mt. Kenya and sometimes to the old abandoned and vandalised shrines of his native tribe. These stories are considered taboo even by his own kin. And he understands that the longer he looks into the abyss, soon enough it will stare back at him. Real treasures are to be found where you least want to look. And that is exactly where he wants to direct you. Into the madness: that's where wisdom lies Wachira is a great admirer of Alexander Mcqueen.
