ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"The Desert Project" comprises 21 color photographs captured amid the Saudi desert dunes. Yannis Kontos, drawing inspiration from historical perspectives of deserts as places for introspection and self-discovery, presents the everchanging sands as simultaneously foreign and familiar. The series conveys an ambient atmosphere akin to the desert's historical role as a space for self-reflection, stripping away societal burdens. Initially, the desert appears devoid of life, a characteristic of documentary photography. However, a closer examination reveals subtle traces of desert beetles in the form of tiny footprints, emphasizing life's persistence even in harsh environments. The series's distinctive feature lies in Kontos's deconstruction of the landscape, transforming dunes into shapes devoid of identifiable scale or proportion. This results in illusions of abstraction, with the fluidity of scale and shapes, and the constant shifting sands sparking imaginative interpretations. Kontos's skillful manipulation of the landscape prompts viewers to witness the Saudi desert morphing into alien planets, the ribbed skeleton of prehistoric creatures, or abstract shapes, resembling a visual Rorschach test. The Desert Project is reminiscent of Brett Weston's iconic American desert photographs, yet Kontos advances the concept into increasingly abstract forms, blending the transcendent desert scenery with a modernist approach that creates pure forms under the scorching desert sun. In essence, "The Desert Project" not only captures the stark beauty of the Saudi desert but also invites viewers to transcend conventional perceptions, engaging with the images as a visual exploration that goes beyond literal representations. Kontos's work stands as a testament to the timeless allure of desert landscapes and their capacity to evoke contemplation and creative interpretation.

Award-winning photographer Yannis Kontos is no stranger to unusual situations. From the everyday life of an amputee in Sierra Leone to warzones around the world, to the streets of Pyongyang, North Korea, Kontos’s lens has captured unadorned but with respect a set of realities unknown to global audiences. His work has been featured in many well-respected publications like Life magazine or the cover of Time magazine. Social issues and the human factor are always center stage in the World Press Photo winner’s 30 year-long career in documentary work, but for his landscape art, it seems that he takes quite a different approach. Currently, Yannis Kontos is an Assistant Professor of Visual Studies and Creative Industries at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences of United Arab Emirates University. He holds a PhD degree in Documentary Photography from the University of Wales (UK) and a Master of Arts degree in Photographic Journalism from the University of Westminster (UK).
