About The Artwork

Walking around Cholon, or District 5, in Ho Chi Minh City, you find temples and pagodas. Often within a 5 minutes walking distance from each other, you can visit quite a few in a morning. Dragons play an important part in Vietnamese history. A Vietnamese proverb goes like this: "Con Rồng, cháu Tiên", "Children of Dragon, Grandchildren of Gods". The proverb refers to the legend of the beginning of the first dynasty of Vietnam, the Emperor Hùng Vương. He was the first born son and he became the king of Lạc Việt. His father was Lạc Long Quân, king of the dragonkind, near the Đông sea. His mother was the goddess Âu Cơ, daughter of the birdkind king Đế Lai.
