I began photography with a Pentax K1000 camera, quickly embracing digital and leaving Canon to become a fervent Sony user. Having studied cultural anthropology at the University of Western Ontario, the curriculum became the itinerary for my adventures in real time. As a film and television location scout for over 25 years, being aware of surroundings and capturing their essence was a part of daily life. As a life long equestrian, photographing horses and their humans at home and in competition was inevitable. While traveling, I became fascinated by cemetery monuments and the elaborate, intricate works of art created by craftsmen. Their beauty challenging me to photograph them in a way to evoke in others the emotions of passion, pain and redemption the artisans sculpted in this eclectic and diverse art form. Most recently, I was introduced to the wild horses living in Nevada, their history and concerns for their future. Spending time amongst the Virginia Range herd, I became aware of the opportunity to educate people while advocating for the horses freedom by sharing images of these stunning animals in their natural environment. My experiences as a photographer have taught me that often circumstances dictate uncontrolled environments to work within. Subsequently, I thrive creating photographs under less than perfect conditions. It is important to me that I try to show how unique and remarkable the subject is in the moment it was captured - the detail in the curve of sculpted art evoking the emotions of a loved one passed or the scars present on the wild horse grazing mountainside. To connect, inspire and invite the viewer to pause and reflect, to uncover the extraordinary within the ordinary. Photography is my way of creating a deeper appreciation of the world in which we live.
