About The Artwork

The process of creating these images is a trail of discovery, an adventure that starts in a completely different place than where it ends. We, humans, are boastfully assured of our keen mind and vivid senses, yet we only perceive a small portion of that which surrounds us, and we process even less. In fact, natural creatures and even plants are more aware of their environment than most of those in our species. However, some among us see and sense more and on different dimensions. These visionary people seem to have a natural ability to perceive beyond, or into, things in a manner that reveals much more. The difficulty comes when they try to explain what they see to a majority of us who only mock them. This is the great advantage of the photographic artist who can capture the light falling onto or emanating from these forms, shapes, textures, and tones and then use their skills to create photographic images that become deeply intimate reflections of what was initially observed. The artwork you see here is based upon shapes I see and photograph as designs and forms. Most of these images are based upon shapes and textures discovered in a stream and pond we restored on our newly acquired property near the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. It is as if these restored natural elements are giving back to us through form and light and it is up to me, as an artist, to capture it and follow the path it directs me to pursue. It is necessary to draw deeply upon the decades of experience as both a photographer and printer to create these final large scale murals. I do so with the greatest respect and in homage to the natural sources that inspire this work. Image has been manipulated by the artist both manually and digitally and is printed on archival canvas or fine art paper. Includes personalized, signed and dated certificate of authenticity.

"Mr. White’s extraordinarily beautiful photographs are extremely moving as works of art." James Kettlewell, Magna Cum Laude History of Art, Harvard University, Professor Emeritus Skidmore College. // ............................................................................. I have been a professional photographer for over 4 decades. During my early years at the San Francisco Art Institute, I had the opportunity to meet and study with world-class photographers including Jack Fulton, Imogene Cunningham, Jerry Burchard, Pirkle Jones, and visiting artists Robert Mapplethorpe, Robert Frank, and Eugene Smith. Since then my work has been published worldwide including Time/Life, Rolling Stone, NY Times, Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, Forbes, and many others. I also served as a professional printer for several well-known photography clients including Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Francesco Scavullo. As an emerging artist, I also experienced the opportunity to meet and study the works of such talented painters as Carlos Villa, Shel Silverstein, Yanko Varda, David Best, Robert DeNiro Sr., and Guillermo Barretto. Their influence and inspiration are evident in the abstract/impressionistic work I present here.
