About The Artwork

The Red Door (Naoshima, Japan, 2010) Travelling through Japan I visited the museum island Naoshima. Located in the Japanese Sea this island houses a couple of great museum designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, a master in concrete. For decades concrete has been favorited by architects, but it is here in this corridor leading up to the Chichu Art museum, that I truly understand the love for concrete, The weathered surfaces give the concrete an almost greenish patina. The slightly angled surfaces frame the perfect blue sky. The fragile play of light and shadows which provides a perfect contrast with the concrete material, shift your focus to the red door at the end of the corridor. The Entrance. Location: Naoshima, Japan Chichu Art Museum by Tadao Ando Medium: Film Print Medium: DiBond

Trained as an architect, Laurens Deuling developed his passion for photography during his education as an architect. Traveling the world for his studies, Laurens was looking for ways to record not only the things he saw but the scenes he experienced. In his approach to photography he is always seeking out the (architectural) narrative. Laurens is interested in not only portraying the architecture itself, but trying to capture the experience of the architecture. It is in the experience of the observer where architecture comes alive. As a medium Laurens loves working with film. It is on film where the qualities of materials, the play of light and shadows can be really appreciated.
