About The Artwork

My favorite subjects are cities and architecture. This shot was an opportunity to combine both, taken at a Tokyo park. My choice was to capture this image with an analog infrared filter, transforming the lush green into white and then enhancing the blacks. The image will be approximately 20x30 and printed in very high quality paper, ideal for capturing the deep blacks and whites. I will add high, gallery quality matting and will sign on the right side, along with the indication of a limited series and series number.

I started photography in the 80’s, learning from my father, an architect. I carried his heavy Nikon around, learned the technical principles and the fundamentals of perspectives and compositions. I returned to photography in the 2000’s, now as a practicing physician. At first, photography and art may seem contradictory or even a diversion from a demanding profession. That misses a great commonality between the two: medicine and photography are both arts informed by science and technology. A knowledgeable and competent physician can miss the greater picture of understanding the person behind the patient as easily as a photographer with in-depth understanding of techniques can miss the moment or the composition. In candor, mastering both arts are the quest of a whole life. All photographers seek to capture the essence of a location, of a subject, of a moment. Physicians chasing an elusive diagnosis look for what has not yet been noted, the combination of objective and subjective nuances that, alone, are meaningless but, as a whole, reveal the truth. When photographing I too seek the unseen, the overlooked moments that thousands walk past every day.
