ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In the fall of 2023, I had the pleasure to spend a few weeks in Telluride, Colorado, photographing fall colors in the mountains. I had heard about a group of aspen trees bending in strange directions. Many people told me the direction they were in but not the exact location. It was a challenge to spot them inside a thick forest. The locals say that years ago, an avalanche caused the growing aspens to curve. I have no idea if that is true or not, but the result of whatever made them twist is spectacular. On my second attempt through the area, I found them. Nature is truly resilient. I love this display of taking what ever the world throws at you and making the best of it.

After 20 years behind the lens, Derek Nielsen’s journey to capture, share—and ultimately, help preserve—the fragile beauty of our planet has taken him to more than two dozen countries and every continent. His stunning photographs don’t just inspire, they connect—linking audiences and resources all over the world to wildlife, landscapes, and people in desperate need of assistance, from Rwanda’s endangered silverback gorillas to the overfished waters of Antarctica. First moved to contribute to global conservation efforts while photographing the ominous splendor of Iceland’s Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a haunting manifestation of climate change, Derek provides a portion of the proceeds from each of his sustainably framed and matted works to on-the-ground, local conservation efforts, including The Conservation Alliance and Borneo’s The Borneo Project. A native of Chicago, Derek carries a friendly midwest smile eager for a conversation with strangers. If you see him in the field or out at events don’t hesitate to ask any questions or just start a conversation about wildlife, conservation, and of course photography.
