About The Artwork

Caroline Dejeneffe’s Under The Surface offers a number of first impressions through its bold composition. An immediate quality is the composition’s generous play with limited color. The minimalist, non-chromatic palette dominates the image with the stark black and white of the figure set against the muted grey background. Likewise, the image enjoys a juxtaposition of geometries with the rectangular format of the image made abundantly clear by the contrasting circular form at the centre of the work and through which the image ultimately functions. Within this formal structure, the figure in Under The Surface represents numerous seemingly binary states but denies a sense of the absolute. Viewers may wonder if the figure is male or female. Is the subject hidden or identified, exposed or covered, vulnerable or defiant? There is tension in play with the circular ‘window’ uncovering the figure, removing layers to reveal a different figure beneath. Yet they remain covered, face obscured, hands placed on the body and returning the missing layers. There is kinetic quality, an interplay of action between the format of the image and a response from the subject. That same richness of action reaches the viewer with an almost tactile quality to the textures achieved in the image. The exposed skin of the figure is perfectly white, perfectly smooth but for the subtle waves of musculature. The extreme texture of the skin contrasts with the perceptible fabric threads of the garment worn by the subject and even more so the hair of the lush, curls of hair. Under The Surface vacillates between notions of mind and body. It suggests the possibility of psychological revelation, of both discovery and denial of deeper senses of identity, and of the vulnerability of being while reveling in sensation, touch and body awareness.
