Untitled / Jantar Mantar, Jaipur / 30.11.22 This image was made in the Jantar Mantar (lit. The Calculating Instrument). However, the Jantar Mantar is not a single instrument but a collection of 19 different astronomical instruments of various shapes and sizes to measure time, predicting eclipses, tracking location of major stars as the earth orbits around the sun, ascertaining the declinations of planets, and determining the celestial altitudes and related ephemerides. It was commissioned by the Kachhwaha king Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, sometime in the early 18th century and completed between 1724 and 1738. The instruments allow the observation of astronomical positions of celestial bodies with the naked eye using the principles of Ptolemaic positional astronomy shared by several ancient civilisations across the Mediterranean, Far East, Middle East, and Asia. I loved how this image came together and how the light cut through the monolithic façade of the surrounding structures. - A1 / 59.4 cm x 84.1 cm [also available as open edition prints] - printed on demand on premium matte paper - signed and numbered by the artist [front and back] - comes with a certificate of authenticity
