"You open the window and look outside, the city is waiting for you somewhere. You go outside and head to the wall where there’s always someone, where the sea begins." Carlos Varela It’s afternoon on any given summer day in Havana, the heat is high, electricity has failed, what should one do? Go to the Malecón. Havana’s iconic seawall, is perhaps the most popular meeting place in Cuba. This impressive 8-kilometer construction was completed in three stages between 1902 and 1958, exclusively as a retaining wall for the raging sea. To escape the suffocating heat and be lulled by the sea breeze —often accompanied by some rum from the ration store—, it was the place to kill time and talk or complain about the day’s events or the meaning of life. The Malecón was a backdrop to so many stories that Cubans have popularly christened the thick and long concrete thread as “Havana’s sofa.” “Vida de Malecon” captures just one moment in the many stories that play out on the Malecón. Four Cuban boys stand on its edge, feeling the summer breeze, looking down at an unknown sight. What do they see? What’s next? Will one or all of them leap into the Gulf? Has a fifth friend already made the leap? Or will they just while the day away watching, talking, contemplating? Anything’s possible with good company and vida de Malecón. - Prints are printed on high-quality archival cotton rag fine art paper with a white border.
