About The Artwork

The photographs in this series originated in natural places where I felt some intuitive affinity or attraction. In making these I was exploring that affinity, which I experience as a threshold joining the visible world of trees, water, and lonesome places, to an invisible and fertile otherworld.  These photographs were made on black and white medium format film, sometimes using plastic toy cameras. Except in printing, digital intervention has been minimal. For 2023 I have initiated a new limited edition of archival pigment prints made from the original medium-format film negatives. Limited edition of 15 Archival pigment print on heavyweight matte fine art paper 14" x 14" image Signed and numbered Certificate of authenticity

Kenneth Jackson's works have included natural environments, still life, portraits, and the figure, rendered using digital, analog, and alternative photographic processes. His work has been exhibited around the US and overseas, featured in publications, and collected. Jackson is also a musician and writer. He and his wife live in the woods with their cats and dog at their home, Crow Hill, in rural North Carolina. STATEMENT: The tension between surface appearances and underlying mystery is where I most enjoy working. I approach my work as poetic visual meditations that respond to, and in some ways express, the deep beauties of this passing world and our brief lives. As James Hillman wrote: "That the world is loveless results directly from the repression of beauty, its beauty and our sensitivity to beauty.” This meaning of beauty is deeply layered and emotionally stirring; unlike the superficial kind of “beauty” so celebrated in popular media, it is essential to the nourishment of the soul. I like to make mages that can be beautiful in this deeper sense, evoking emotions, memories, and dreams; a trail of breadcrumbs leading us back to a love of the world."
