ABOUT THE ARTWORK

kep-sur-mer: cambodia's modern temple kep was established by the french at the beginning of the 20th century for the colonial rulers to get a rest from their political tasks. after the withdrawal of the french occupying powers and independence in 1953, the new cambodian elite, promoted by king sihanouk, continued this tradition. thus, until the beginning of the seventies, many villas were built in the so-called "new khmer architecture" style. this style was characterized by a mixture of partly experimental elements of early european modern with traditional and functional cambodian construction. the takeover of the red khmer under pol pot, decades of war, political instability and the genocide led to a cruel and abrupt end and the loss of this unique architectural period in indochina. all villas were looted and destroyed respectively rendered uninhabitable. now they remind of a elegant past as well as the horrors of the reign of the red khmer. - original photo print with océ lightjet exposure system - mounted on aluminum dibond 3mm - kodak pro ultra endura (250g/m²), matte - matte surface non-reflective surface - aluminium rail rectangle - guarantee 100 years of color brilliance limited edition of 7 + 2 ap ————————————————————— 60x40 cm - €1115 90x60 cm - €1500 120x80 cm - €2000 ————————————————————— numbered, certified and signed © 2020 maximilian gottwald |

- born 1980 in munich / germany - living and working in herrsching / near munich - working as an architecture photographer - dad of two kids - loves to work in the garden and especially grow tomatoes and vegetables and fruits - studied photography design - influenced by magritte, escher, casper david friedrich, dürer, richter, becher, cartier-bresson, bialobrzesky, shore, crewdson, arbus, burtynsky and many more - about my work: in my long-term project "asian dusk - the empire of light" i document cityscapes and impressions of asian metropolises. i especially like the impressive interaction of natural light and artificial light during twilight and night shots. in the urban landscapes, which never come to rest, i try to get a certain order out of the composition of light, color, surface and lines. visiting an asian city is an overwhelming experience that captures all senses. in search of a suitable location, i am driven by the smells and sounds of the big city jungle with the intention to transform the hectic and the chaos into an aesthetic calm and balance.
