About the Artist

Larisa Cataño

Germany

When I arrived to Berlin, Germany in Autumn 2005, I didn't expect the effect of the winter on me as a person and as an artist. I can only say that at the beginning it turned into a deep depression but afterwards I started to see beyond the coldness and darkness and discovered a new palette of colors, shapes and textures that I didn't know before.
Since I come from Mexico City, I didn't have the experience of walking over a frozen canal or to really be witness of the changing seasons. Therefore I discovered a new topic, form and medium to express and develop my art work.
Before, I was concentrating my work on painting and drawing with topics that were occurring in indoor spaces. Rooms, furniture, characters with a very colorful palette. After experiencing the long german winter, and in a unexpected way, I started to make photography and drawing the main medium for my work.
What I never imagine that I would be able for, is to be outdoor with my camera in such a cold weather and to really enjoy it. Since then is winter my favorite time of the year to work. Winter has inspired me, and my palette turned much more monochromatic and my topics became much more introspective thou the outdoor landscapes.
With the series "summer nightmares, winter dreams" I started to combine very personal symbols with the Berlin winter landscapes using the printed photography as a background mixed with drawings which melt together into a whole.
During my winter residency at the Baltic Sea I kept working with this artistic process: landscape printed photography mixed with ink drawing.
After a couple of years photographing the parks, canals and the berliner Spree, I integrated to my work the forest, the fields, the open sky and above all the sea. The landscape and atmosphere of that region melted together with local stories that I was able to know about.
