Carmen Samoila is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans sculpture, painting, photography, cyanotype, and mixed media. Moving with quiet intensity between genres, her practice is rooted in an enduring inquiry into presence—what endures, what dissolves, and what light emerges from the depths. Her work often dwells at thresholds: between darkness and illumination, between memory and form. Whether through atmospheric oil landscapes or hand-rendered cyanotype monoprints, she navigates emotional terrain with precision and restraint. Her use of materials—natural light, botanical matter, pigment, and at times, her own blood—is both intuitive and elemental, linking body to land, sensation to gesture. Samoila’s process blends analog and digital techniques, yet resists categorization. She paints with light as much as oil, and photographs with the awareness of a sculptor—each piece an imprint of moment, motion, and atmosphere. Across decades, her work has remained driven not by trends, but by the pull of interior truth and the mystery of perception. Based in Western Canada, her practice emerges in close relationship with landscape, solitude, and subtle transformation. The result is a body of work that does not seek to explain, but to invite—to create a space where the viewer can meet themselves in stillness, shadow, and the luminous tension between what is known and what is felt.
