ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Presented as still life studies, the series of balancing acts using commonplace objects is a reference to thought. The process is something we all experience without noticing, every minute - have a thought, hold it for a while and let it go. The first in the triptych, “first movement”, is a contemplation on the way a ‘seed thought’ multiplies to quickly become a cluster, leading to action. The prints are not reproductions from paintings. They are painstakingly painted on up to 100 layers with a touch-sensitive stylus in a paint programme. This way they can be printed on the studio printer that makes artwork of archival quality. In essence this is no different to traditional printmaking where the artist is both platemaker and printer. Stylus Painting/Giclee Print on Canson Photographique Rag 310 gsm

I suppose I might be classified as a re-emerging, late career artist. I took a detour into multimedia thirty years ago and have brought some of those skills back into the Studio, where I am now settling into printmaking and painting once again. In the seventies I was inspired by study of global mythology and the Western traditions including the works of Jung on alchemy and symbols. This led to decades of Eastern practices that focus on the nature of the mind and Consciousness. In the early sixties I was a working musician with the Red Onion Jazz Band and a founding member of The Loved Ones who are regarded as one of Australia’s iconic rhythm & blues bands and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010. I now play an Indian harmonium as accompaniment to Vedic mantra practices.
