About The Artwork

Stylus Painting/Giclee Print on Canson Photographique Rag 310 gsm. 36"x36" edition of 10 also available. King Parrot (Queen) In this series of birds, the subject is presented as a profile portrait, slightly larger than life size. References to contemporary, ancient and prehistoric landscapes form the background cameos. The main focus is on the eye. More psychological portraits than ornithological studies, the images reflect the character and ancestry of the bird and the effect of eye contact. It is a slightly unsettling experience to have close eye contact with some of the more alert birds, long enough to know that you are as much the observed as the observer. This raises the whole question of consciousness. Is it the same consciousness observing itself in different forms? The prints are not reproductions from paintings. They are painstakingly painted on up to 100 layers with a touch-sensitive stylus in a paint programme. This way they can be printed on the studio printer that makes artwork of archival quality. In essence this is no different to traditional printmaking where the artist is both platemaker and printer.

I suppose I might be classified as a re-emerging, late career artist. I took a detour into multimedia thirty years ago and have brought some of those skills back into the Studio, where I am now settling into printmaking and painting once again. In the seventies I was inspired by study of global mythology and the Western traditions including the works of Jung on alchemy and symbols. This led to decades of Eastern practices that focus on the nature of the mind and Consciousness. In the early sixties I was a working musician with the Red Onion Jazz Band and a founding member of The Loved Ones who are regarded as one of Australia’s iconic rhythm & blues bands and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010. I now play an Indian harmonium as accompaniment to Vedic mantra practices.
