In the constant search for “home”, I asked myself not only where that place is, but what the word itself means to me. Is it the land of your ancestors, is it a “happy place”, is it where you choose to put down roots and grow? My work takes inspiration from the natural landscape. On a larger scale: mountains, the sea, forests; on a closer level, individual trees themselves. They mark time, witnessing humanity come and go whilst silently providing nourishment, shade and a sense of continuity. Much the same as humans, they are interconnected, with the ability to communicate with each other and help each other survive. Nature represents a permanent backdrop to history. For the viewer, using broad brushstrokes, it provides a sense of the "uncanny" - that which is familiar yet can't be placed. Something everyone can relate to, yet every time they come back to it, a different sensation is evoked.
