Mao Money - Limited Edition of 6 Print

'Mao Money' was first conceived in 2011 as commentary on the burgeoning Chinese economy, and its increasing influence in the West. For my own amusement I visited several local printers, all flatly refusing to print the image on account of its 'political sensitivity'. I persisted until finding a printer who subsequently ran $250,000 worth, laser cutting the notes to size. I sensed I'd struck on something with the image, and so when returning to it some time later in 2017 I decided to post a 5 meter wide version in the city of Chengdu, China. People's reactions were a mix of confusion and amusement, with many posing for selfies in front of the piece. I went on to have many conversations about the artwork (since I had already proofed many versions in my studio), often having to dismiss the idea of any political intention. Mao's image seemed to me to be the perfect target for a 'pop art' piece, not least in the context of rising consumerism circa 2011, and the fever pitch discussions being tabled in the West over China's economic development. Living and working in China it became increasingly obvious to me that the real story was an invasion of familiar Western brands, and how this might in fact be where the power of economy lives. This power transcends all political ideologies, replacing them with how citizens choose to spend their wealth. In many respects this image is a comment on the power of branding, and how it has the ability to travel both distance and time. I hope this image also raises the question of how the viewer places value on 'money', and the subsequent choices that are made with it.
