Moody, mysterious and atmospheric. A description similar to many of my oil paintings. Each week I spend a day in an etching studio, and I find this complex 'process driven' work complements well the fluid expressiveness of oil painting. This piece was inspired by the fabulous windswept region of Rutland Water in the North of England. The water and air merge and vibrate, changing the appearance of the landscape with each moment. To create this etching I have used a zinc plate, aquatint (melting resin onto the plate with a flame, to allow the ink to 'grip'), litho crayon, acid and burnishing. The professional etching ink is smeared onto the plate and gently removed, with some additional ink deliberately left on the plate to create the variation between each individual 'monotype'. The image is formed by placing the inked plate on the bed of an etching press (see photo), with a sheet of 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper, on top. The press is then hand 'wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper. This method of printing creates a 'monotype' as each print is different, and varies according to the application of the coloured inks. The monotype offered for sale is as shown in the photograph. Lizzie Butler is an expressive, semi abstract artist, who works in a contemporary style in oil. Her strong spatial awareness and a passion for working en plein air, inform her practice and lead to paintings that recreate the intangible atmosphere found in landscapes and the peaceful silence of nature. Most of her paintings are begun outside and completed in her London studio. Although working primarily in oil, Lizzie also enjoys the physicality of exploring etching with zinc and steel plates, to create intaglio prints. Lizzie Butler's artwork has been exhibited at Leighton House Museum, Kensington, London, The Russell Gallery, London, and several other Galleries. Lizzie's paintings can be found in collections in America, New Zealand, the UK and across Europe, with several customers returning to buy further paintings and place commissions.
