I have been creating portraits of Garibaldi for some time now. I have been inspired in this activity, by Garibaldi's example of heroism as exemplified in his life, literally an odyssey similar to that of Greek mythology. After taking part in a rebellion against the occupying powers in Italy and being sentenced to death, he escapes to Marseilles and then to South America. He joins pirates in Argentina and then assembles a fighting force joining sea battles up and down the Rio Grande river and in Uruguay. He then returns to Italy with a battle-hardened liberation force and begins to fight for the forces of the Risorgimento, the wars for the unification of Italy. This involves three major campaigns, including the Defense of Rome and the invasion of Sicily. His loyal companion and comrade in arms, Anita Garibaldi is another important side story to this incredible saga.
