"Seated male nude clasping foot " is an etching using the traditional method of hard wax ground. An etching needle is used to draw into the prepared plate. I think this is the most exciting way to draw as each mark is final. A good quality final image depends on the sensitivity of hand pressure applied to the etching needle, the drawing skills and preparation of the plate. I use Somerset paper which is acid-free and will not yellow with age. My male nude etchings start with selecting one of my original drawings. I begin by drawing free-hand onto the prepared plate and focus on making strong, continuous lines. This free-style drawing method is an inhibiting experience due to fear of making the wrong mark, the required skill in correcting unwanted marks along with expensive materials . I chose this model for my etchings as he is tall and lean, yet muscular. Life -drawing onto surfaces such as etching plates allows me to practise drawing and give me great pleasure due to my interest in the human body.

Please visit me on : www.mariannesturtridge.com I am an art teacher by profession and enjoy the constant challenges of "problem solving" and frustration that goes with art. Teaching art has encouraged me to experiment with new approaches and draw from a history of art knowledge. My paintings seek to convey a range of human feelings from community to alienation, sometimes with a religious, mythological or fantasy theme. While teaching children with physical disabilities I explored themes on attitudes towards disability, illness and censorship. The foundation of my work is drawing, often evolving into mixed media. My painting style ranges from traditional oil and watercolour painting to experimental work in a wide range of materials including computer-based art, bas-relief and ceramics. Alongside painting I have made clay sculptures including torsos and shoes. I use my life drawings as a starting point when making clay torsos and try to capture something of the person in this work.
