During the Vietnam War there was a rise in draft resistance as a political statement. A group of students, primarily associated with the University at Buffalo, had been active against the draft and the war. When they and supporters sought sanctuary in the Unitarian church on Elmwood Avenue, U.S. Marshals, FBI agents, and Buffalo Police surrounded the church. The minister, Dr. Paul Carnes, was out of the country in Romania during this time. Eventually, the lawmen "stormed" the church.. When the group of lawmen entered the church, they used blackjacks to "clear the aisle". Bruce Beyer, a leader of the Buffalo Draft Resistance Union, was arrested, as were seven others, on charges including draft evasion and assaulting an officer. Others arrested included prominent campus radicals Carl Kronberg and Jerry Gross. A later investigation led them to arrest Students for a Democratic Society organizer Bill Yates. This work was inspired by the press clipping that day of the arrest. The artist has given a "Renaissance style" religious format to the painting with putti and all. The outline of the photographer, federal Marshall, and Bruce eyer creates a modern, abstract space, fattened and transformed, into another dimension. Although described as an ink print to canvas, the artist applies fresh oil pains to the image for texture, making each print a unique, one of a kind image, since all are a bit different from one another while retaining the same overall image. The original has been gifted to the surviving wife of Bruce Beyer who passed away several years ago. Hopefully it will find its way to a museum and.or Bruce Beyer's archive.
