Amsterdam based artist Kees Schouten brings the art of the surrealistic collage to a contemporary level, combining antique engravings and various clippings with contemporary styles. Various elements are superimposed onto mystifying locations and scenarios, playing with exaggeration and proportions. In these collaged prints of the series "Women of the World" i use many (copies of) old engravings with clouds, wind and a simple representation of the earth. I use this mostly as a background. On top of that i use pictures of women, boats, fish, etc. from a collection i gathered through the years. In quite a few case i get cooperation from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Vintage fashion magazines from France are also favorite. An eternal source of inspiration are the collages the German artist Max Ernst made just about a century ago. The image seems to be an illustration of a story. It’s not. It is a story in itself. Printmaking: Ink on Paper / collage. The combining of all the elements to a collage is partly a digital process. The result is a high quality inkjet print (fine art print) on heavy Hahnemuhle watercolor paper with (on this print) a collaged element (two layers) in the center (lady with fish-tail). This print comes in an edition of 24. The print is numbered and signed on the back and comes with a numbered and signed certificate of authenticity. It also comes with a numbered and signed sticker that can be attached to the back of a frame. The artwork is sold without frame. The collaged element is hand-cut so all the prints are slightly different.
