ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Since 2017 I am looking for a way to integrate my interest in physics and astronomy in my visual art. The result is that my work has become more abstract. The different states of matter: solid, liquid, gas and the phenomenon of entropy were the topics I focused on. The panel has a construction for hanging on the rear.

The longing for the landscape of my youth has been a source of inspiration for my work for years: The flat land near the North Sea on the edge of the continent. Themes such as the Dutch Landscape, the ship, water, wind, clouds, movement represent this nostalgia. In recent years my focus has been on a different theme. I have been interested in astronomy since high school, but only now I found time to study and attend lectures on physics and astronomy. There was a certain logic to me in visualizing this learning process in ceramics, the material I’ve been working with for more than 40 years. My tiles often have a didactic component. For myself, with the aim of learning something about a physics subject. But also for others to show the beauty of logic and science. Since 2020 I have been working on the series “Notes on Matter and Antimatter”. These are ceramic tiles that you can think of as the pages of a workbook. I have explored topics in physics and astronomy, for example: Bubble chamber photos showing the movements of subatomic particles. I am currently working on another project: April 8 2024, I was in Texas for the total solar eclipse. The photos I took will be used in my next project: 2024 Great American Eclipse.
