About The Artwork

Putu Adi Gunawan, an artist hailing from the Class of 1990s, has been fashioning whimsical figures of both humans and animals, characterized by their plump postures and infectious happiness. These sculptures, resembling cheerful caricatures of individuals engaged in various activities, will come to life in his solo exhibition titled “Enjoy the Moment” at Art Jakarta from November 17th to 19th, 2023. Initially crafting his sculptural works from wood, Adi Gunawan’s character relies on a philosophical concept regarding the system and his personal struggles. I saw an expression of his philosophy in the two-person exhibition “Rumah Tangga” (Household) in the early 2000s. Adi Gunawan received a lukewarm public reception at the time. In the art exhibitions he participated in, he felt that his sculptures were only a complement to the sufferers, perhaps because they had many similarities with his seniors’ works, including Anusapati. Still, Adi Gunawan persevered, examined further, rummaged into his inner self to define his own definition of beauty. “Beauty, for me, are those fat figures,” he said (November 3rd, 2023). The figures of thin, gloomy, sad, and hopeless people are not included in Adi Gunawan’s character ideas. In 2007, Adi Gunawan unveiled the definition of ‘beauty is fat’ through his groundbreaking solo exhibition at Bentara Budaya, Yogyakarta. The exhibition showcased bronze sculptures of his beloved plump figures adorned with natural colors made of bronze material. His focus on these endearing characters persists until today, with each piece portraying different facets of human behavior in everyday life.
