About The Artwork

The work "Abacus, Western Zhou Dynasty, 1046-771BC", composed of Murano glass spheres, juxtapose an ancient Chinese calculator method with a refreshing Pop Art scale and sense of play, a commentary on new and old traditions, both East and West, during our contemporary moment. By revisiting the abacus an abstract form, the sculpture invites viewers to explore and celebrate color, scale, math, and material. First installed in Venice at Open 10 in 2007, the Abacus work was included in a large scale 2012 glass retrospective, Glastress Stockholm, at Millesgarden Museum Stockholm as well as the contemporary art glass exhibit Glass Fever in Dordrecht Museum, Netherlands, in 2016. Abacus was fabricated as a collaboration between the artist and master glassblowers in Murano Venice, mixing pigments to produce surfaces marked by ethereal streaks and speckles to reveal handmade craft and line. The work breathes fresh life into the Eastern traditions that shaped the artist's childhood and still informs her artistic perspective. The artwork fuses East and West, inviting viewers to see through time and material. The piece is available for sale, price available upon request.
